Map Help
Each Map has its own tool bar and may not include all these tools.
To see what function each tool performs, move your mouse cursor over the tool, a tool tip will appear giving a brief definition of the tools function. Furthermore, when a tool is selected, the tool mode is displayed in the bottom left corner of the viewer.
If a tool in the toolbar appears with a red box around it, then it is the active tool and ready to be applied in the map frame. For instance in the picture on the left, the Zoom in tool is active.
This button toggles between the Layers available for visibility
and activation, and the Legend shown below.
The Layers list shows available layer for display notice the boxes in the visible column and the Active column next to the Layer names. Also as one zooms into or out of the map one may notice new layers appearing or disappearing in this list. Many of the layer are set to turn on an off according to scale of the map.
The visible
column has check boxes notice in this example Cities Pop > 100k is not selected
so it would not be visible. This layer is made visible by clicking on box, which
adds a check mark and then clicking the Refresh Map button at bottom. Likewise
to remove a layer, simply click the box to remove check mark and click the
Refresh Map button .
Please note the map is redraw in each case and will not be
updated without clicking the Refresh Map button.
The Active column has radio
buttons which when selected activate that layer, note that only one layer can be
active at a time. The change is immediate, there is no need to refresh map. A
layer that has been activated allows user to query data table and to use the
identify button
to get more
information.
Legend shows the different layers and how they are symbolized. For example SRA Parks are symbolized by a red triangle, Cites are denoted by differing size black dots based on population.
This button
turns Overview Map (pictured below) on and off. The default for the overview Map
is on.

Overview Map and the extent rectangle show the extent of map in map frame area. The user may also click on a location in the Overview Map and have the Map Frame pan to that location.
This feature is used to zoom into the map. Simply make this
feature active and then make a box around the area of the map you wish to zoom
into. Click and drag a zoom window. Some data layers are scale dependant, which
means that the more the user zooms in the more detail becomes available.
This
feature is used to zoom out of the map. After making this feature active click
and drag a window in order to zoom out of the map.
This
option allows the user to zoom to the full extent of the map.
This
option allows user to zoom to extent of the active layer.
Back to Last Extent (Zoom to previous extent)
By
selecting this option the user is returned to the previous view of the map. For
example, if a user is looking at a wide area and then zooms in to a more
detailed view. By selecting zoom previous the user will be returned to the wide
area view.
This option is
used to pan around the map. When this option is active the user can click and
drag to move around the map retaining the same scale.

This
option can only be used on active layers. When the identify tool is used it
lists the attributes, or information, about the selected object. Try this option
out, you never know what type of information will be connected to an object.
Use this tool to follow links built into the map.
This option
can be used to find features within an active layer. For example, while the
Roads Layer is active user could select this option and type the name of a road
and the system would find all these roads and list them below in the identify
box and highlight them on the map. The user can then select item in the list and
the map will zoom to the selected feature.
This tool
can be used to measure on the map. All measurements are given in feet. The user
clicks once to select the starting point, then clicks the ending point. The
total measurement and the segment measurement is given.
This option
is used to print out a map. This print contains a scale, legend, and north
arrow. We suggest you zoom into the area you desire before selecting the print
option.
This option
allows user to set the map units. For example if user changes units from miles
to meter the scale bar and the measure tool would now show the units in meters.
The default is miles.
Allows user
to buffer feature in map. Feature must be selected first.
